A previously healthy 18-month-old child is brought to the ED after a 2-minute generalized tonic-clonic seizure that occurred with fever during a viral upper respiratory tract infection. The child returned to baseline within 20 minutes and has a normal neurologic examination. There is no prior seizure history, no CNS infection signs, and development is age-appropriate. The mother asks how to prevent future febrile seizures and what to do if another seizure occurs.
