A 9-year-old child is brought to clinic for declining school performance for 4 months. Teachers describe frequent brief episodes several times per hour in which the child abruptly stops activity and stares for 10–15 seconds with subtle eyelid fluttering. There is no loss of postural tone, no postictal confusion, and the child is unaware of the events. Neurologic examination between episodes is normal. EEG shows generalized 3-Hz spike-and-wave discharges. Which medication is most likely to be effective?
