Last updated: February 2026
A 7-year-old boy has had recurrent episodes for 1 month of sudden, brief jerky movements of the right arm lasting 3–5 seconds. Episodes occur without warning and are not associated with impaired awareness, postictal confusion, incontinence, or tongue biting. He remains fully aware and recalls each event. Neurologic examination between episodes is normal, and brain MRI shows no structural abnormality. He is diagnosed with focal-onset motor seizures without impaired awareness and is starting pharmacologic therapy. What is the most appropriate antiseizure medication?
