A 15-month-old previously healthy boy is brought to the emergency department after a generalized tonic–clonic seizure lasting about 5 minutes. Earlier today, he developed cough and rhinorrhea with a documented fever. In the ED, he is alert, interactive, and consolable. Neurologic examination shows normal tone and strength, no focal deficits, and normal pupillary responses. There is no prior seizure, head trauma, developmental delay, or family history of epilepsy. What is the most appropriate management at this time?
