A 5-year-old toilet-trained girl has 2 days of dysuria and urinary frequency. She is well-appearing, eating and drinking normally, and has no flank pain or vomiting. Examination shows no costovertebral angle tenderness. Urinalysis is consistent with a bacterial urinary tract infection. She has no drug allergies and no previous urinary tract infections.
