A 7-year-old girl is brought to a pediatric neurology clinic for frequent episodes in which she abruptly stops speaking, stares, and is unresponsive for about 10 seconds, then immediately resumes activity without confusion. Episodes occur many times daily for several months. There is no limb jerking, loss of postural tone, incontinence, or postictal sleepiness. Neurologic examination between episodes is normal. EEG shows generalized 3-Hz spike-and-wave activity. Which medication is the most appropriate treatment for this patient’s seizures?
