A 40-year-old woman has 4 months of painless right anterior neck swelling with palpitations, heat intolerance, and unintentional weight loss despite increased appetite. Examination shows a solitary, firm, non-tender 3 cm nodule in the right thyroid lobe with no cervical lymphadenopathy and no ophthalmopathy. Thyroid uptake scan shows focal increased uptake in the right lobe with suppression of the remaining thyroid tissue. She is not pregnant and has no history of neck irradiation.
