A 40-year-old man is postoperative day 7 after open laparotomy with adhesiolysis for adhesive small-bowel obstruction. For 2 days, he has noticed a small amount of seropurulent discharge soaking the central portion of his midline wound dressing. The incision is mostly well approximated with mild surrounding erythema and focal central tenderness. There is no obvious wound gaping or evisceration. What is the most appropriate immediate management?
