A full-term male newborn is delivered by elective cesarean section after an uncomplicated pregnancy. At 1 hour of age, he develops tachypnea with mild subcostal retractions and has difficulty feeding because of rapid breathing. There is no grunting or nasal flaring, and cardiac and lung auscultation are otherwise normal. Chest X-ray shows prominent pulmonary vascular markings and fluid in the interlobar fissures.
