A 17-year-old male has 24 hours of progressively worsening right lower quadrant abdominal pain with anorexia and nausea. Examination shows localized right lower quadrant tenderness with rebound. He undergoes open exploration for suspected appendicitis. Intraoperatively, the appendix and cecum appear normal, but the terminal ileum is markedly edematous, thickened, and inflamed over several centimeters with no perforation, abscess, obstruction, or mass and no generalized contamination. What is the most appropriate next step in management?
