A 55-year-old man is brought to the emergency department after a high-speed motor vehicle collision with blunt abdominal trauma. He is pale and diaphoretic with diffuse abdominal tenderness and no obvious external bleeding. He received 2 L of isotonic crystalloid with no meaningful blood pressure response.
