A 14-year-old girl has 6 months of cyclic lower abdominal and pelvic pain with primary amenorrhoea. She is Tanner stage IV. External genital examination shows a tense, bulging bluish membrane at the vaginal introitus. Pelvic ultrasound shows hematocolpos and hematometra. She undergoes hymenectomy with evacuation of retained blood and creation of a vaginal opening. What is the most appropriate postoperative step to prevent re-occlusion of the vaginal opening?
