A 7-year-old boy is evaluated for anemia found on routine testing. He has mild jaundice and scleral icterus but is active and asymptomatic. Examination shows a spleen tip palpable 2 cm below the left costal margin. Peripheral smear shows numerous spherocytes without schistocytes. Osmotic fragility testing supports a red cell membrane disorder. He has no prior transfusions and no history of gallstones. What is the most appropriate management at this time?
